  6. Troubleshooting Capabilities Across Broad Range of Networking Environments

  8. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- January 13, 1992 -- Novell, Inc., today announced shipment
  9. of LANalyzer v3.11A, a new version of its expert network analyzer that expands
  10. the unique Automated Troubleshooting System, adds extensive new report
  11. generation capabilities, offers protocol decodes for 18 of the most widely
  12. used networking environments, and features a new down-sized Ethernet interface
  13. card.

  15. "Networks have become the foundation of many of today's businesses, and
  16. network managers no longer have the luxury of prolonged trial and error
  17. problem resolution.  They need answers fast," said Duane Murray, vice
  18. president and general manager of Novell's Network Management Products
  19. Division.  "LANalyzer helps increase network uptime, a key to the growth of
  20. network computing, through its ability to zero in on a virtually unlimited set
  21. of network problems quickly and efficiently.  Release 3.11A substantially
  22. enhances an already solid product and extends its scope into the vast majority
  23. of the networking environments in common use today."

  25. LANalyzer v3.11A builds on the expert system concept pioneered by Novell in
  26. mid-1990 with the release of LANalyzer v3.0, the first network analysis
  27. product capable of interactively leading the user step-by-step through the
  28. diagnostic process.  LANalyzer's Automated Troubleshooting System (ATS) acts
  29. as a network "sieve," filtering out extraneous traffic and identifying and
  30. diagnosing network malfunctions in the most prevalent networking environments
  31. and topologies.  LANalyzer is currently the market-leading network analyzer
  32. and has the largest worldwide installed base.

  34. "The best thing about LANalyzer is that it's easy to use," said Ron Cooney,
  35. facility manager, ground systems development environment, Loral Space
  36. Information Systems in Houston, Texas.  "Other analyzers tell you as much, but
  37. you don't know what you're looking at.  With LANalyzer you do." Cooney uses
  38. LANalyzer to maintain a network that includes more than 200 nodes, most of
  39. them DEC 5000 and 2100 workstations, and 10 NetWare servers.

  42. network," Cooney added.  "With LANalyzer, I was able to detect the problem and
  43. solve it less than an hour after taking the product out of the box.  Anyone
  44. familiar with networks can easily understand how to use LANalyzer.  We use the
  45. product proactively, detecting and resolving potential problems before anyone
  46. is affected.  As a network manager, I couldn't do my job without LANalyzer."

  48. New in LANalyzer v3.11A

  50.   ~  Expanded expert system -- ATS now includes more than 175 pre-defined
  51.      testing routines, up from 146 in the last release, that can detect
  52.      hundreds of specific network malfunctions.  These include duplicate IP
  53.      addresses, routing loop errors and beaconing token rings.  These tests
  54.      also track network "vital signs" such as token rotation time, Ethernet
  55.      packet collisions, and broadcast storms.  All tests can be edited to
  56.      desired criteria, and experienced users can create their own tests using
  57.      LANalyzer templates.

  59.   ~  Standardized report generation capabilities -- LANalyzer integrates its
  60.      reporting capabilities with the two most popular spreadsheet
  61.      applications:  Microsoft Excel and Lotus 1-2-3.  By using a set of macros
  62.      included in LANalyzer software, users can display specified information
  63.      from LANalyzer trace files and plot the results in full color using Excel
  64.      graphing tools.  Similar capabilities for Lotus 1-2-3 have been part of
  65.      LANalyzer since mid-1990.

  67.   ~  Protocol decode support for five additional network environments --
  68.      LANalyzer is the only network analyzer to offer decodes for NetWare Lite,
  69.      Novell's new peer-to-peer networking software.  In addition, this release
  70.      includes full decodes for the LAT terminal emulation protocol from
  71.      Digital Equipment Corporation; SNMP over IPX, an emerging network
  72.      management protocol; OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), a newly defined
  73.      high-speed IP routing protocol; and X-Windows, commonly used to transfer
  74.      graphical user interface information over a network.

  76.      LANalyzer now includes protocol decodes for 18 distinct networking
  77.      environments.  All decodes are part of the core product and are included
  78.      at no extra per-protocol charge.

  80.   ~  More power in a smaller package -- The new down-sized Ethernet card can
  81.      be installed in virtually any standard PC chassis, including most new
  82.      notebook computers.  It runs 20 percent faster than the full-sized card
  83.      it replaces, while consuming half the power.  The new card is also the
  84.      first analysis controller to feature built-in 10BASE-T support,
  85.      eliminating the need for a separate transceiver.

  89. Novell's LANalyzer 3.11A, consisting of LANalyzer's expert Automatic
  90. Troubleshooting System, full decodes for 18 networking environments, LANalyzer
  91. operational software, a specialized network analysis interface card and
  92. extensive documentation, is available now through LANalyzer authorized
  93. resellers.  Versions for Ethernet or Token Ring (4 and 16 Mbps) topologies
  94. list for US$12,500.  A combined Ethernet and Token Ring version lists for
  95. US$19,980.
